Phytobezoar following gastric surgery

Abstract
The authors have experienced a case of phytobezoar in the gastrojejunostomy junction, following gastrojejunostomy and truncal vagotomy due to duodenal ulcer. The signs and symptoms were developed about 3 years after gastric surgery.
1) Most of the complications seen after gastric resection have been repeatedly reported and vigorously discussed.
2) Incidence is likely to rise because of"increasing numbers of the partial gastrectomies being done and also because of rising popularity of fruits of fibrous nature.
3) Patient who have had a partial gastrectomy and vagotomy are more susceptible to development of a gastric phytobezoar than the normal population.
4) Definite diagnosis of this disease was carried out by careful history taking, observation of signs and symptoms and supported by result of upper G-I series, and gastroscopy.
5) This complication of gastrectomy can be prevented by proper diet, However, it is important that you should not eat certain foods that you have perhaps eaten in the past. Eating foodstuffs that are listed below have been found to result in bowel obstruction after one has had stomach surgery. Oranges, grapefruit, figs, apples, string beans, brussel sprouts, cabbage, berries and baked potato peel, persimmon should be avoided unless they are properly chewed or mechanically minced.
One case of gastric phytobezoar after gastric surgery is reported in Pusan Maryknoll Hospital, and literatures was reviewed.
